Turkey Life Cycle Activities

Hi, friends!  November is fast approaching, and it's almost turkey time!  Of course, we always spend some time learning all about turkeys.  This post is filled with some of my most favorite life cycle of a turkey activities.

One of my favorite stories to read during our turkey activities week is Sometimes It's Turkey, Sometimes It's Feathers by Lorna Balian.

At the beginning of the story, Mrs. Gumm finds a turkey egg which she promptly places inside her basket to take home.  Once the egg hatches, she begins to fatten the turkey so he is nice and plump for Thanksgiving dinner.

This story is a Thanksgiving classic with just enough suspense to keep your kiddos engaged until the very end.  It is perfect for making predictions, and your kiddos will be delightfully surprised by the twist!

As we read the story, I stop to add the appropriate piece to our turkey life cycle anchor chart.  We discuss these new vocabulary words in context with the story.  Although the story doesn't use the words "chick" and "poult," the illustrations do provide a great visual example of these terms.

This anchor chart provides a great reference as we complete our "Turkey Life Cycle" craft.  My kiddos love spinning the life cycle spinner on the turkey's body.  We even share them with our friends across the hall, as we teach them all about the life cycle of a turkey!

My favorite are these turkey flip flap books.  I just can't get over this adorable, tall turkey!  Plus, I love that my kiddos can practice using the words "first," "next," "then," and "last" as they orally tell the steps of the life cycle with a partner.

During our reading block, we read about the life cycle of a turkey using these emergent readers.

Since my kiddos enjoyed our pumpkin life cycle pocket chart sentences so much, I decided to whip up a set to go along with the life cycle of a turkey.  After correctly sequencing the sentences, we complete this "Life Cycle Line Up" turkey activity.  You can grab them for FREE at the end of this post!

As we wrap up our turkey activities, we create our "All About Turkeys" flap books.  These books are such a cute way to display all of the information we have learned about turkeys... not to mention they make an adorable bulletin board!
