One Sharp Bunch: Pumpkin Life Cycle Activities

Some of our favorite pumpkin books are Pumpkin, Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington, From Seed to Pumpkin by Wendy Pfeffer, and It's Pumpkin Time by Zoe Hall.

It's Pumpkin Time begins with two children preparing for one of their favorite holidays. Of course, they have to plant pumpkin seeds to get ready for Halloween! As the story, unfolds we learn all about the life cycle of a pumpkin... And aren't these illustrations just so vibrant and kid friendly?! I'm in love with their adorable puppy!

As we read the story, we create our pumpkin life cycle anchor chart. We stop after each page or so to add the appropriate piece to the pumpkin life cycle. Together, the story and anchor chart help introduce and solidify many of our pumpkin vocabulary words.

Our anchor chart also provides a great reference as we complete our Pumpkin Life Cycle craftivity and flip flap books.

Of course, we add in some literacy with these Pumpkin Life Cycle emergent readers. As we read the story, we highlight the word "see."

During center time, the kiddos mix and fix these pumpkin life cycle pocket chart sentences. These sentences match the sentences in our Pumpkin Life Cycle emergent reader. The students can easily see which cards go together, because they have matching pictures. Once they have assembled each sentence, they read to make sure that the sentences are in the correct sequence for the pumpkin life cycle.

They also complete this simple response sheet by filling in the missing word "see," and gluing the life cycle pictures in the correct order.

It's Pumpkin Time ends with the kids carving their pumpkin for Halloween. This is the perfect segue into what's inside a pumpkin. As we're completing our pumpkin investigation stations, the kiddos make this "What's Inside a Pumpkin?" craftivity. All you need is yarn for the pulp and some pumpkin seeds!
