Hi, friends! Can you believe it's almost March?! Where has this school year gone?! March is about the time that I start really kicking it into high gear, but of course we have to have a little leprechaun fun for St. Patrick's Day!

If you read my Books Teachers Love post for February, you would have seen that I love incorporating literacy into my math instruction! AND I love Kathryn Heling's series of "Ten....." books! Ten Lucky Leprechauns begins with one leprechaun searching for other leprechaun friends and treasures. This particular book lends itself perfectly to adding one.
The adorable illustrations are vibrant with color, while the rhyming text is full of new vocabulary words. As we read, we take time to define these words using the context clues from the text on that page.
During our math instruction, I reread the story. This time, I have the students act out the story using a ten frame and counters. I stop after each page so that the students can model the story. Then, we orally recite the number sentence that fits this story problem...such as one plus one equals two.
After reciting the number sentence, we record it on our response sheet. We continue modeling the story with our ten frame and recording the number sentence until we reach the end of the story, which by the way is incredibly cute!
We also have a little St. Patty's Day fun during our math and literacy stations!
